- QWill you sharpen my kitchen knife for me?
We sharpen Sugimoto’s knives at any time.
■If you visit our store
(For domestic kitchen knives)
If you visit us before 2:00 p.m., we can sharpen your knife in about an hour. In December we will need about 2 hours.
■If you send your knife to us
Contact us first, then send your knife to us. After we receive your knife, we will send it back to you on the following business day. If you want us to contact you in advance to let you know the costs involved, please let us know.
We only accept cash on delivery (COD). We will charge for sharpening, postage, and COD commission. Please pay the courier company (Yamato Transport Co., Ltd.). In addition, please let us know if you want your knife to be returned to you on a specific date and time.
- QHow much does it cost to sharpen a knife?
It depends on the type of knife and its size.
Please let us know the type of knife, its size (the length of its blade), the state of its blade (whether it is nicked or chipped, etc.). Please be aware that the price we will give you will only be an estimate. We cannot provide an accurate quote without first seeing the knife itself. Depending on the condition of the knife, additional charges may be necessary.
- QCan you repair damage to the knife's handle?
It depends on the state of the knife.
[For a Japanese knife]
If the tang of the blade (the part that fits into the handle) has not deteriorated, then repair is possible. If the tang has deteriorated, repair is not possible because the blade cannot be welded. If we can make repairs, we will require about a month, and the cost will be from around 3,000 yen onwards.
[For a Western knife]
If the tang of the blade (the part that is sandwiched between the halves of the handle) has not dete-riorated, then repair is possible. If this part of the blade has deteriorated, repair is not possible be-cause the blade cannot be welded. If we can make repairs, we will require about a month, and the cost will be from around 3,000 yen onwards.
[For a Chinese knife]
We can repair these, but will replace the old handle with a new Sugimoto Hamono handle. The cost of repairs and time required will vary, depending on the condition of the knife. For details, please contact us.
- QI want a knife that is the same as the one that I am using at the moment.
If it is a Western knife, look on the back side of the blade (the left side when you hold the knife with the blade pointing downwards). The 4-digit number (or sometime letters and 4 digits) is the product number. Please refer to this. If the numbers have worn away or if you have some other type of kitchen knife, please check the following and then contact us.

- QI want to have a name put on the knife, can you do that for me?
Yes, we will do that for free. Please let us know the details when you order the knife.
Please be aware that a knife that you have had inscribed with a name cannot be returned to us for a refund or exchanged for another product.
- QI only want to purchase a wooden sheath for my knife. Can I do this?
We do not sell sheaths by themselves because each sheath needs to be tailored to fit its knife. We prepare patterns to match all of our products, so our sheaths may be totally mismatched for knives made by other companies. If you wish to purchase a wooden sheath for a Sugimoto knife that you have already bought from us, we will still need to match the sheath exactly to your knife, so we will require you to bring the knife to our shop or courier it to us.
- QI want to buy a knife to be a gift for someone. Can you help me with that?
Please let us know what you would like.
We can send the knife directly to the address that you specify. If you want the gift to have a Japanese noshigami gift label paper, please let us know in advance.
- QCan you send knives overseas?
Yes, we can. You can place your order via the shopping cart on our website. Check the postage fee and the method of payment on the shopping guide page.
Some countries may require customs duty to be paid. Please understand that we will not be responsible for the payment of any customs duty.
